Using Mind-Maps and Diagrams to Reflect on the Creative Process

Sometimes, the most disconcerting part of creative work is the amount of time that it takes to generate a great idea and publish it. I write poems and songs, so I decided to compare the processes of composition. I feel like I can create a product that I am satisfied much more quickly as a poem.

Although I knew this on a subconscious level, drawing a mind-map helped me to visualize what an extensive process songwriting can be. I realized that creating a recorded song requires many more layers of decisions, refinement and judgment.

Like a journey through a treacherous land, each part of the process may spell doom for an idea. A lot of ideas have to work in concert to create something magical. A recording is an entire system ideas attempting to capture magic.

The mind-map diagram is a useful reminder that one must embrace and be comfortable with time and process.

Diagrams are also interesting if you have discovered a system for creating unusual sounds and you want to document the process.
